Sotomayor debuted in 2015 with “Salvaje”, an album that allowed them to perform in the 2015 edition of "Vive Latino", and perform several festivals around the globe in countries like England, the US, Mexico and Colombia. The album received excellent reviews from foreign media in countries like Japan, Australia, United Kingdom, Chile, United States and Colombia. The list of medias talking about the band includes names like Remezcla (US), Fresh on the Net (UK), KEXP (US), RedBull Panamerika (LATAM), Indie Rocks! (MX), Marvin (MX), Mtv Iggy (US), Vice (MX) and La Banda Elástica (US) just to name some. They also appeared in more than 25 lists of the best of the year from medias from all around the world.
In 2016 “Salvaje” obtained 5 nomination to the IMAS Awards (Independent Music Awards) for best album in the electronic music category, best new act, best live act, best art or packaging for an album, and best song of the year for “Cielo”. From this nomination the band obtained one prize, for “best electronic album of the year”. Also that year they recorded their first KEXP session. They where the second Mexican band to ever do a session at their studio in Seattle, and that open the sound of the band to an international audience.
Following the success of their debut album, 2017 saw the release of “Conquistador”, an album funded trough Kickstarter with a much more mature sound that defined not only the sound of the band, but the sound of the so called “New Latin Wave”, a movement of Latin American bands that explore its heritage trough contemporary music. With this album the band performed its first International tour visiting 6 cities in the US, 5 countries in Europe, countries like Colombia, Chile and Peru in South America, and 12 cities in Mexico.
2020 saw the release of “Orígenes” their 3rd studio album trough the NY based label Wonderwheel Recordings. This album was recorded between Mexico and Puerto Rico, and was produced by the 28 times Grammy Winner Eduardo Cabra aka “Visitante” from the legendary band “Calle 13”. In this production Sotomayor explores a new Afro Caribbean vision in the music, much more dance floor focused, and highly influenced by percussion.
“Orígenes” came out feb 14th 2020, just a month before the world lockdown due to the pandemic. With this, cancellations of a tour in the US, a European Tour, and their biggest solo show in Mexico, unfortunately happened. The accelerated growth of the band stoped, and siblings took their own paths. Paulina started her own project “Pahua”, and Raúl started producing other artists albums under the name “Tonga Conga”. They both released 2 studio solo albums and built a career on their own that is still going.
2025 marked a 10 year period since the release of Sotomayor’s first album “Salvaje”, and with that idea in mind, Raúl and Paulina decided to make a new record, a record that will close the cycle that somehow got broken by the pandemic.
